Transformers

Ferrite cores are pressure-molded ceramic structures of various shapes, made by mixing iron oxides with oxides or carbonates of metal such as nickel, magnesium, or zinc. The cores are pressed into shapes, then fired in a kiln and machined as needed to meet various operational requirements.

Typical Applications
Manganese-Zinc type ferrite core transformers are used for a wide variety of communication and power applications such as switching power supplies, filters, converters and inverters, adjustable inductors, and other high frequency applications up to 1,000 KHz.

Nickel-Iron-Molybdenum (MMP) type power core transformers, though more expensive, are the preferred choice for frequencies below 300 KHz. Applications include high Q filters, resonant circuits, RFI filters, low-loss inductors for switch-mode power supplies, switching regulators, and noise filters.

Electrical Characteristics
Ferrites have low eddy current losses over a wide frequency range, high permeability, and excellent temperature stability.

Custom Magnetics typically produces ferrite core transformers up to 3 KW at 50 KHz and up to 9 KW at 250 KHz. Typical frequencies range from 1 KHz up to 1 MHz.

Physical Characteristics
Ferrite cores are available in many shapes including E, EC, EP, ETD, PC (Pot), PQ, RM, RS (Slab), Rods, TC (toroidal), and U. Typical sizes produced at Custom Magnetics range from 1/8" cube to 4" cube. Various standard mounting styles are available, including PCB pin-mounting and surface-mounting. Tape/Reel packaging is also available.
